SALVATGE COR
(WILD HEART)
poems by albert roig and music by
krishoo monthieux and marc egea, hurdy gurdy. videos
by dionís escorsa. dancers àngels margarit and
alexis eupierre.
at the caixaforum auditorium, in the spring
of 2002, there was a performance of a dancer, alexis eupierre (companyia
lapsus), a musician, marc egea (hurdy gurdy) and a poet, albert
roig. it turned out to be the seed of salvatge cor. the show has
since been enhanced with the music of krishoo monthieux (percussionist
and composer and cofounder of the french group fff), the
participation of dancer àngels margarit (companyia mudances), of
the actress sílvia bel as well as that of the artist dionís
escorsa (has shown his videoinstallations in germany, italy and
spain). all of them accomplished artists with a solid
background. the fruits of this cojoint effort are an original,
fresh, yet mature show which has already been programmed on
several stages though some variations have applied.
the articulation of the show emanates from the poems of albert
roig who has recently published córrer la taronja (1979 -
2001), a poetry collection tantamount with over twenty years of
dedication. this is the first time albert roig has allowed his
poems to go on stage within the context of a show both, sensual
and direct, after many years of working exclusively on printed
format and since becoming one of the most outstanding and
serious voices of contemporary catalan poetry.

the soul soon
poisons the body and adopts ill shapes for it cannot stand being
looked at. some bear it inside, others carry it as a shadow -
nobody walks next to it.
albert roig, que no
passa, ed.62, 1990
ofici de poeta
the poet’s craft
els llibres de meravelles d’arnaut daniel, de manoel de barros,
d’abu-nuwas
in auto-retrato manoel
de barros claims to have invented thirty-five no-objects, poets’
things, useless. but he only mentions five of them. elsewhere,
in another poem, he mentions another two. they are: a set of
creamy pliers, an opener for sunrise, a safety pin to secure
silences, a grumbly nail, a velvet screw-top, a river shortener
and some horizon stretchers ñ um alicate cremoso, um abridor de
amanhecer, uma fivela de prender silencios, um prego que
farfalha, um parafuso de veludo, um encolhedor de rios, um
esticador de horizontes. barros takes his inspiration from
provenÁal arnaut daniel who had invented a shovel for piling up
the winds, the auras, as he put it. albert roig has only been
capable of adding two: a strainer for forgetting and a
wave-mirror mask with a pitch-black mouth which returns the
voice of either woman or child. according to him it is a scant
bare thread of a voice which inhebriates the earth, shiny as the
spiderweb which spreads the dew, fullmoons and the silverwind of
olivegroves.
a strainer for
forgetting. the quarters for writing and marking and those of
full imitation and erasing. abu-nuwas, al-hassan ibn hani,
before being the poet of onethousand and one nights, before he
had even written his first verse, had to learn by heart, like
any other rawi, one thousand fragments from the ancient poets.
after reciting them to his master, khalaf al-ahmar, he was told
to forget them all before he would set to write his very first
verse. poetry, like dance: an art which must be learnt and
unlearnt.
