in memoriam bob cobbing (1920-2002)

PROPOSTA is an annual festival dedicated to contemporary poetical practises, especially to the most daring and their fields of fusion. the festival's proposals go beyond text and look for a direct contact with the audience, whether through oral forms or dialogue with other disciplines. the festival aims to show a global overview of contemporary poetry; for that purpose it offers live performances, talks, projections and an exhaustive catalogue including all the information.
PROPOSTA is an annual meeting point for thinking and dialogue with an open-minded view of poetry and creation. in addition, the festival, after two years, has become one of the essential poetic rendezvous in europe; above all it's become a gateway for new proposals for both creators and audience in barcelona. it's a literary festival that goes beyond the narrow view of limiting poetry to a book.
PROPOSTA, on this third year, looks for the first time at the connection between word and new technologies. at the same time, as usual, it intends to offer new authors from abroad (christophe fiat, jörg piringer) and also tries to investigate the neighbouring fields of poetry. this year there's a special emphasis on the relation between music and poetry; the most remarkable example of this being the opening by enric casasses and pascal comalade. furthermore, there are two distinguished performances: bob cobbing, top poet and experimenter in uk, and sten hanson, one of the first artists to use voice processing with tape recorder and computer.

unfortunatelly, bob cobbing died in london on september 29th. he was 82 years old. he had accepted our invitation, but due health problems he was not able to come to barcelona to take part in PROPOSTA 2002 and decided to do the performance with recorded elements and with live performance by his friend hugh metcalfe. it’s the last performance by bob and our homage to this internationally celebrated poet, publisher and performer.

three

as though everything were taking shape and gaining consistency: the third edition of PROPOSTA. it’s not only a matter of audience and figures: this annual rendez-vous, together with many more, provides new ideas, retrospective glances and energy to the city and its poetic web. this year, almost without planning, the PROPOSTA program looks at the field existing between poetry and music. after all, the distance between them is brief.

to begin with, i would like to stress the space dedicated to interaction between voice and new technologies; we have a tribute to the pioneers with ferran cuadras’ talk and the distinguished attendance of sten hanson; we also have, more recent, bernard baud’s and jörg piringer’s contribution; the oulipian space, with a personal talk by víctor sunyol and the update of hundred billion poems by queneau brought to life by eugenio tisselli, ester xargay and carles hac mor. although his health hasn’t allowed him to come over to barcelona, the virtual presence of bob cobbing (real historical character in experimental poetry and the freest) is undoubtedly an essential part in our program for this year along with the physical presence of hugh metcalfe. we also have a deluxe opening with enric casasses and pascal comelade, christophe fiat’s fresh air and michael lentz’ and biagio cepollaro’s mastery of the stage.

the program is without doubt diverse: a road with quite a few lay bys that show poetry is more than a sleeping book; it also proves that working on the present doesn’t mean being at an avant-garde dead end. i don’t think our passengers mind sharp bends, although too often in the world of literature some characters defend a limping literature in which time doesn’t seem to have anything to say.

in short : a wide range of languages and origins working poetry with full freedom and the possibilities we have today to hand. not before not behind: poetry, now. while the world’s view gets narrower, word and voice take diverse shapes which never stop surprising us. we read a text that is always feeding itself.

have a nice reading then, in such a sound autumn.
