Nobuo
sonores.
escultòriques i altres formes d'art visual.
Institut, Heidelberg, Alemanya).

Kubota is a master of extended vocal techniques which explore the
boundaries of the human voice and its relationship to the physical
body, including facial mime. Although his work is not based in language
it uses the sonic and phonetic elements of language in its expression
and attempts to freely and fully explore the apparatus of the vocal
mechanism to present a diverse form of communication. Kubota's vocal
work is fore-grounded in sound poetry and free jazz improvisation
through his experiences as an original member of the Artist's Jazz
Band, the dynamic improvising orchestra, the CCMC and his exposure
to the work of the Four Horsemen. He lived and studied in Kyoto, Japan
with the Zen master, Sohaku Kobori where one of the disciplines that
influenced his sound work was the chanting of Buddhist sutras. He
combines the improvisational process with his own cultural background
and interests in Japanese and Korean Court Music and Korean Story
Singing. Improvisation rather than pre-constructed or composed forms
is the focus of his vocal work. His recent vocal works include self-accompaniment
with various sound making devices and real-time sampling.
Kubota was a practicing architect before devoting himself full time
to visual art, music and sound/vocal performance. He continues to
devote much of his time to sculptural installations and other forms
of visual art. Currently, his visual work has been focused on visual
sound poetry which explores the strategy of "intermedia"
and serves as an extension to his vocal work. As a musician, Kubota
played saxophone, electronics, pre-recorded sounds and a barrage of
sound making devices . Recently, he has been performing as a solo
vocalist in Europe's most prestigious sound poetry festivals, including
YesbePoetry Festival (University of Bologna, Italy), Bobeobi Festival
(Berlin, Germany), Polysonneries (Lyon, France) and Words & Voices
Festival (Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut, Heidelberg, Germany). His
new work, under the title of "Mouth Mechanics", investigates
the mechanics of vocalism and the dramatization of the possible sources
and development of vocal/mouth sounds.
